Design and Construction
Plastic-rimmed aquariums are essentially standard silicone-bonded tanks fitted with protective or decorative plastic moldings along the top and bottom edges. This rim serves as both a visual frame and practical protection for the glass's most vulnerable points – the corners and raw edges. These rims are often molded from high-impact ABS plastic or similar materials.
Personal Experiences
I have purchased and used several of these models over the years. While they are functional, I must admit that I prefer pure silicone-bonded rimless aquariums for their minimalist look, or classic aluminum-framed tanks, which often feel more robust. However, plastic rims can be an excellent and economical solution for smaller tanks, breeding setups, or quarantine units where practicality outweighs pure aesthetics.
Advantages and Maintenance
A significant advantage of the plastic rim is that it effectively conceals the calcium deposits that inevitably form at the water line, while also hiding the transition between the glass and the substrate. In terms of maintenance, they are easy to wipe down, but one should be aware that algae or debris can accumulate over time in the small gap between the plastic and the glass. During a complete rescape, it is recommended to clean these transitions thoroughly.
