Aulonocara sp. 'Red ruby' is as far as I know not a natural form, but a variant produced by line breeding of Aulonocara sp 'Stuartgranti Maleri' in Germany. Among other names, I have also found Aulonocara sp. 'Chipoka orange', Aulonocara sp. 'Chipoka', Aulonocara sp. 'Maleri' and popular names such as Red ruby, Rubescens, German red are widespread. There are likely more variants of the name, but as far as I can gather on Google and in various books, they are essentially one and the same fish.
Many are strongly opposed to such 'artificial' fish, and personally I am also opposed to, for example, excessive finnage that hampers the fish's natural behavior and crosses between different species, but this fish balances for me on the edge of what can be accepted and I have therefore tried it out.
The male in the picture is far from as red as they can be, but this requires, among other things, feeding with color-enhancing food. I have heard that cyclops should also enhance the color, but although I feed with cyclops about 2 times a week, it is still mostly orange. I think it is incredibly beautiful nonetheless.
