A Discreet Utaka from the Deep
Copadichromis ilesi, often confused with or sold under the trade name Virginalis, is one of Lake Malawi's more understated Utaka cichlids. As an aquarist, it is easy to be tempted by the hope of the vibrant colors seen in related species like 'Virginalis Gold', but the ilesi variant often requires a great deal of patience.
Experiences with Growth and Development
My own experiences with this species have been characterized by very slow development. When I acquired a small group, they mostly resembled small, anonymous herring, and even after a year in the tank, they had neither grown significantly nor begun to show the expected colors. It is a fish that can test any hobbyist's patience, as they can remain quite colorless and anonymous in appearance for long periods.
Behavior and Tank Mates
In the aquarium, they behave like typical Utakas, preferring open water. They are generally peaceful, but their lack of growth and color development can mean they are easily overlooked in a lively Malawi setup. To get the best out of the species, specific feeding conditions and a calm environment—where they are not dominated by more active Mbunas—are likely required.
Status in the Hobby
Due to the slow development, I personally ended up parting with my group during a major reorganization of my tanks. This is a fish for the specialist who has the space and time to wait for them to one day show their true potential.
