Sciaenochromis fryeri, commonly known as the "Electric Blue Ahli," is undoubtedly among the most stunning Malawi cichlids. While I tend to say that about many of my fish, there is something truly special about the intense, metallic blue color of a full-grown male. My own male, at about 10 cm, is always the first fish people notice when looking at the tank.
Behavior and Social Structure
In the aquarium, this fish displays a lot of personality. My male has claimed a specific spot between a rock and a piece of driftwood, from which he monitors the entire tank. While it is often said that you should only keep one male per aquarium, success can be found with multiple males (3-4), provided you avoid keeping exactly two, as the dominant one will relentlessly stress the subordinate. It is important to remember that the Ahli is a specialized predator (piscivore) that in the wild feeds on small mbuna fry. In a tank environment, it will happily snap up small fish or fry if given the chance.
Breeding and Fry Care
As a mouthbrooder, it is highly efficient and willing to breed. My pair has had several spawns; the first was modest with 12 fry, but subsequent broods have increased to around 30-40 fry. Once the female has released the fry, it rarely takes long before she is carrying eggs again. It is fascinating to watch the male court the female, after which she retreats to brood faithfully.
Aquarium Setup
To thrive, S. fryeri requires ample swimming space and a tank of at least 250 liters. The decor should consist of plenty of rocks forming caves, as well as open sandy areas. As a predator, their diet should be protein-rich, but avoid overly fatty foods to keep them healthy and vibrant. The water must be hard and alkaline with a $pH$ of 7.5-8.5.
