Adult Artemia salina is one of the most widely available frozen foods in the hobby. Since adult brine shrimp grow to over 1 cm in size, they are primarily suitable for medium to large aquarium fish, such as cichlids, larger barbs, and gouramis.
Nutritional Value and Quality
Artemia are highly regarded for their rich protein content and essential amino acids, which support healthy growth and vibrant coloration. However, they are often more expensive than other frozen options. I personally tend to favor frozen Cyclops because they are more cost-effective and suitable for both adults and fry. That said, if your tank consists mainly of larger fish, adult Artemia provides excellent substance.
Proper Feeding and Thawing
To maintain optimal water quality, I recommend thawing the frozen cubes in a fine-mesh sieve and rinsing them under cold tap water before adding them to the tank. This prevents the nutrient-rich liquid from the melting process—which can contain high levels of phosphates—from entering your aquarium.
Freeze Your Own Surplus Nauplii
When hatching Artemia, the nutritional value of the nauplii is highest immediately after hatching. Once they begin to grow and consume their yolk sac, their value as a food source drops. If you have hatched more than your fish can eat, don't throw them away. You can freeze the excess nauplii in thin sheets. This is the simplest way to create your own frozen food and ensures that no part of your batch goes to waste.
