Rainbowfish

Rainbowfish – Jewels of Oceania

Rainbowfish (Melanotaeniidae) are renowned for their spectacular colors and energetic behavior. They originate mainly from Australia, New Guinea, and surrounding islands, inhabiting environments ranging from fast-flowing rainforest rivers to calm lakes.

Behavior and Care

Rainbowfish are generally peaceful schooling fish that thrive in community tanks with plenty of open swimming space. They are very active and typically occupy the upper and middle layers of the water column. To bring out their most brilliant colors, high-quality lighting and a varied diet are essential.

Water Quality

Several species, such as the Forktail Blue-eye (*Pseudomugil furcatus*), are particularly sensitive to water conditions. They require well-oxygenated water and frequent water changes, as they do not tolerate the buildup of waste products. For species from New Guinea, a temperature of 24-28°C and a neutral to slightly alkaline pH are usually ideal.

Status in the Hobby

While many rainbowfish are incredibly beautiful, they demand consistent attention to water maintenance. They are an excellent alternative to more common community fish, adding vibrant movement and color to the aquarium.
