In late 2005, following the removal of my large shelving unit, I couldn't resist a starter set deal at Maxizoo for just 299 DKK. It fit the space previously occupied by my 45-liter tank perfectly. The set was complete with a lid, light, filter, heater, and accessories. My main motivation was the full-cover lid, though I found the included lighting lacked the power to properly illuminate the tank.
Technical Equipment and Interior
I opted for a large air-driven filter instead of the internal one provided. Lighting is handled by the built-in tube, and I use the 50W heater only when necessary. The substrate features a thin layer of fine red Råda granite (0.8-1.2 mm), accompanied by a few fist-sized stones, two coconut caves, and a very small piece of driftwood.
Planting and Usage
The tank is heavily planted with Najas guadalupensis. This floating plant is excellent for water purification and provides vital cover for fry. For a long period, it housed a thriving community of Corydoras sterbai, Guppies, and Heterandria formosa. It was also used for my best breeding attempt with Butterfly Cichlids to date, though it ultimately remained unsuccessful.
Status
While these sets offer great value, I have concluded that purchasing components separately better suits my needs for specific quality standards. The aquarium has since been sold.
