Historical Development
My own first aquarium featured an aluminum frame, which at the time represented a significant technological leap forward. Before aluminum frames became the standard, steel or iron frames were commonly used. These older types were sealed with putty, which unfortunately resulted in limited durability as the putty would dry out and crack over time. The bottoms often utilized alternative materials such as slate or thin iron plates rather than glass, making the tanks heavy and difficult to maintain.
Benefits of Aluminum Frames
The introduction of aluminum and silicone revolutionized the hobby. Aluminum is corrosion-resistant and lightweight, while modern aquarium-grade silicone ensures an elastic and 100% leak-proof seal. The frame also protects the glass edges from impact and provides structural stability, making it suitable even for large water volumes. While rimless aquariums are gaining popularity today, many enthusiasts still prefer the aluminum look for its classic finish and reliability.
