This is my aquarium plan anno 2005. Things in italics were the things I managed to complete, while those that are crossed out are the things I did not get done.
A significant change has occurred since I made this plan in the spring of 2005. I have decided to decommission my two 325-liter aquariums, and this will have a major impact on which species I can keep in the future.
Aquariums and equipment
I have sold my large aquarium rack with the 2 325-liter aquariums, as well as my 45-liter and one of my 25-liter tanks. I only have my small rack left and some "loose" breeding tanks. Ever since 2003, I have been considering getting a large corner aquarium for the living room, but I don't have space for the 470-liter one I fell in love with. On the equipment side, I am well covered; perhaps I will invest in some external filters, but I haven't decided yet. For the sake of the plants and photography, I am also considering buying a double T5 fixture of 2x24W with a built-in reflector 2x39W with loose reflectors, which I will install over my new 148-liter and my two 75-liter tanks. Above my 128-liter and 100-liter tanks, I will initially mount reflectors.
Fish and plant purchases
I have made a list of the fish I would like to try my hand at in the future, as well as others I am just considering.
- Live-bearing toothcarps
- Characins (primarily tetras)
Rummy-nose, Hemigrammus bleheriBlack Phantom Tetra, Megalamphodus megalopterusDwarf Pencilfish, Nannostomus marginatusThree-lined Pencilfish, Nannostomus trifasciatus
- Cichlids
- Southern mouthbrooder, Pseudocrenilabrus philander dispersus
- Shell dweller, Neolamprologus similis
- Tanganyikan cichlid, Neolamprologus leleupi
- Tanganyikan cichlid, Cyprichromis leptosoma "Tanzania Neon"
Pseudotropheus socolofiA Labidochromis species, e.g., zebroides, sp. 'Hongi' or sp. 'perlmutt'
- Catfish
I have not yet decided on a species, but I would like to try another suckermouth catfish species.
For most of the tetra and barb species, I will continuously get rid of the species where I have been successful with breeding. My Melanochromis auratus will be sold when they are ready.
Breeding
In 2004, I set out to try breeding a wide range of traditional egg-laying aquarium fish, from zebrafish to cardinal tetras. Here I have listed an order and reasoning for each fish.
Dwarf gourami to test infusoria production.- Red shoulder angelfish to produce a batch for sale,
as well as to do another using the natural method. Congo tetra, Phenacogrammus interruptusEmperor tetra, Nematobrycon palmeri- Cherry barb, Puntius titteya
Harlequin rasbora, Trigonostigma heteromorphaSilvertip tetra, Hasemania nanaCorydoras sterbaiBlack neon tetra, Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodiCardinal tetra, Paracheirodon axelrodi- Red platy, Xiphophorus maculatus, mostly for fun
- Guppy, Poecilia reticulata, to breed one or two strong and beautiful strains
In addition to the above, I naturally also hope that my other cichlids will spawn regularly and that I can take fry from them for raising.
